Election campaigns in Kirtipur Municipality are in full swing as 20 candidates gear up to contest for two vacant ward chairperson positions in the upcoming by-election on December 1, 2024.
The by-election, part of a nationwide effort to fill 42 vacant seats, will decide the ward chairperson posts for Ward Nos. 1 and 4 in Kirtipur Municipality, which lies in close proximity to Kathmandu, the federal capital.
Candidates and Election Environment
Among the candidates, nine represent various political parties, while 11 are independents, including a candidate from the sexually marginalized community. The diverse lineup reflects growing interest and inclusivity in local governance.
Chief Election Officer Indira Karki emphasized Kirtipur’s unique position in this election, noting its proximity to Kathmandu and the opportunity to elect two representatives in a single local level, making it a focal point of attention.
Silence Period and Election Preparation
The silence period will begin at midnight on November 28, three days before the polls, as per Neeta Pokharel Aryal, Spokesperson and Joint-Secretary at the Election Commission of Nepal (ECN). The commission is actively monitoring adherence to the election code of conduct and conducting voter education campaigns to ensure a smooth election process.
“Candidates are actively campaigning and attending all-party meetings organized by the Commission. Their cooperation has been commendable,” said Chief Election Officer Karki.
