Silence Period for Local-Level By-Elections Begins
The silence period for the upcoming by-elections at the local level began at midnight, prohibiting all forms of election-related publicity and campaigning in accordance with the Election Code of Conduct.
The Election Commission (EC) has emphasized the need for all stakeholders to ensure the elections, scheduled for December 1, are conducted in a free, fair, and impartial manner. The silence period, which started 48 hours before the voting day, will remain in effect until the completion of the vote counting process.
Restrictions During the Silence Period
During this period, the EC has imposed strict prohibitions on:
Public events such as assemblies, interactions, workshops, and seminars in support of or against candidates.
Campaigning through digital platforms or social media, including SMS, Facebook, and Viber.
Any direct or indirect solicitation of votes for candidates.
EC Spokesperson Nita Pokharel confirmed that arrangements have been made to enforce the election code of conduct across the concerned local levels through continuous monitoring.
Election Preparations
The EC has mobilized monitoring teams to oversee compliance with the code of conduct and to prevent violations during the silence period. Authorities have warned of strict action against any breaches of the rules, underscoring the importance of maintaining a level playing field for all candidates.
The by-election, which involves select local levels, is part of Nepal’s effort to fill vacancies in municipal and rural councils and is seen as a critical process to strengthen local governance.
