NHRC Investigates Alleged Police Abuse of Rabi Lamichhane, RSP Chairperson Transferred for Statement
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has initiated an investigation into allegations of inhumane treatment and human rights violations against Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President Rabi Lamichhane by the police.
The investigation follows a complaint filed with the NHRC, alleging that Lamichhane, a former Home Minister currently in custody for his alleged involvement in a cooperative’s fraud case, was mistreated during his transfer from Chitwan to Kaski late at night. The complaint claims that the actions were ordered by the Inspector General of Police.
In response, the NHRC summoned Additional Inspector General Tek Bahadur Tamang and other senior police officers to its Central Office in Kathmandu for questioning. NHRC spokesperson Dr. Tikaram Pokharel confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that further discussions with the Inspector General of Police are required to reach a conclusion.
Meanwhile, Lamichhane has been brought to Parsa for a statement as part of an investigation into his alleged involvement in embezzlement linked to the Birgunj-based Sano Paila Cooperatives.
The Parsa District Court issued an arrest warrant for Lamichhane and 13 others on December 4 concerning the cooperative fraud case. Authorities allege the misappropriation of savings deposited by members.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Kishore Lamsal confirmed that Lamichhane was flown from Pokhara to Parsa for further investigation. This follows a series of arrest warrants issued against him by courts in Kaski, Rupandehi, Kathmandu, and Chitwan.
Lamichhane’s legal troubles continue to unfold as investigations progress in multiple districts.
