Government to Honour 35 Sports Personalities for International Achievements

The government of Nepal has announced plans to honour 35 sports personalities for their exceptional performances in international competitions. This includes award-winning players, coaches, managers, and physiotherapists who contributed to Nepal’s victories in football, karate, and beach volleyball.

Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, shared the announcement while unveiling the decisions from cabinet meetings held on Thursday and Friday.

In addition to celebrating the country’s sporting achievements, the government has approved a series of important initiatives. These include addressing challenges related to the under-construction Nagdhunga Tunnel Project and advancing compensation for affected parties.

Other key decisions include the approval of USD 100 million in grant assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for the Green, Resilient, and Inclusive Development Programme, as well as ADB’s USD 170 million concessional loan and USD 15 million grant for improving drinking water supply in the Kathmandu Valley.

The government also agreed to accept USD 3 million from the Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia and the Pacific, alongside USD 85 million from ADB for the modernization of irrigation.

Further decisions included the appointment of Devraj Dgungana as Executive Director of the Security Print Press Centre and the nomination of Dr. Rajendra Prasad Baral and Deepakraj Sapkota to the Board of Directors of the Shahid Gangalal National Heart Centre.

Additionally, the government approved the fourth periodic report to be submitted by Nepal to the Committee of the Convention on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights, as well as an MoU between Nepal and India for water, sanitation, and hygiene projects.

Other approvals included the Electronic Good-Governance Commission (Formation and Operation) (First Amendment) Order, a guideline on the usage of domestically produced goods in public offices, the Micro, Cottage, and Small Enterprises Promotion Policy, the Industrial and Investment Promotion Fund Operation Procedure, and the National Urban Development Policy-2081 BS.
