Nepal Police Reports Rising Incidents of Social Crimes

Social crimes have been on the rise across Nepal, with Nepal Police recording an average of 162 such cases daily, according to the latest data released by the Nepal Police Headquarters for the first quarter of the current fiscal year.

Rising Crime Statistics

Presenting the data on Wednesday, Nepal Police Spokesperson and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bishwo Adhikari highlighted alarming trends in several categories of crime:

Suicide Cases: An average of 20 cases are reported daily.

Rape Cases: Seven cases of forceful rape are filed daily.

Homicides: 192 cases were registered by mid-November this year, slightly down from 193 during the same period last year.

Rape: 823 cases were reported this year, up from 809 last year.

Attempted Rape: Cases rose to 186 from 163 in the same period last fiscal year.

Organized Crime: A sharp increase, with 39 cases this year compared to five last year.

Drug-Related Cases: Increased to 1,619 from 1,369 in the first quarter of the previous fiscal year.

The rising trend has prompted Nepal Police to intensify awareness campaigns to curb social and financial crimes nationwide.

Increasing Police Resignations

The report also revealed a growing trend of police personnel resigning from their posts, particularly among junior ranks. In the first four months of the fiscal year, 509 police personnel resigned, while 248 others were retired compulsorily.

Despite the resignations, Police Headquarters recruited 622 personnel during this period. Among them:

96 were appointed as police inspectors.

68 as technical police sub-inspectors.

364 as sub-inspectors.

94 as office assistants.

Efforts to Address the Crisis

SSP Adhikari emphasized the need for continued awareness campaigns and structural improvements to address the growing incidence of social crimes and to retain skilled personnel within the force.
