Acquisition of Citizenship to Be Simplified: Home Minister Lekhak
Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has pledged to simplify the process of acquiring citizenship for those eligible under the Constitution and laws. The Minister made the statement while receiving the report from the Citizenship Problem Resolution Study Committee at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Singha Durbar, on Friday.
“Individuals who meet the constitutional and legal criteria for citizenship will receive it without unnecessary delays. At the same time, we will ensure that ineligible individuals are not granted citizenship,” Minister Lekhak emphasized, noting the sensitivity of the issue.
He stressed that procedural hurdles should not deprive eligible citizens of their rights and urged respect for Supreme Court verdicts on citizenship. “The government is committed to addressing the challenges in citizenship acquisition by adhering to legal frameworks and court directives,” he added.
The report submitted by the Committee provides recommendations after analyzing court rulings, existing legal provisions, and practical complications encountered during citizenship distribution at District Administration Offices.
Among its key suggestions is facilitating citizenship for children born to Nepali mothers. The five-member Committee, led by Joint Secretary Dr. Tok Raj Pandey, was formed on August 16 to address citizenship-related challenges.
Minister Lekhak assured that the Ministry will thoroughly review the report and work on its implementation to ensure a balanced and fair approach to citizenship distribution.
