Australian Investigation Exposes Alleged Chinese Spy Ring Targeting Dissidents Overseas

Australia’s public broadcaster reveals chilling details of a covert operation orchestrated by China’s secret police service, aimed at tracking down and abducting dissidents living abroad.

The investigation, conducted by Australian Broadcasting Corp.’s Four Corners program, features a former Chinese spy known only as “Eric,” who divulges the clandestine activities of a unit within China’s Ministry of Public Security operating in Sydney as recently as last year.

“Eric” recounts his role in deceiving and luring dissidents from countries including India, Thailand, Canada, and Australia, under orders from Beijing to facilitate their abduction and return to China. His testimony sheds light on the shadowy workings of the Political Security Protection Bureau, also known as the 1st Bureau, tasked with silencing perceived threats to the Chinese state.

Amidst mounting evidence, Peter Mattis, a China analyst at the Jamestown Foundation, underscores Beijing’s concerted efforts to suppress dissent within the Chinese diaspora, suggesting the bureau’s involvement in silencing dissidents and mapping their networks.

The expose, supported by secret documents and correspondence, implicates Chinese authorities in using anti-corruption campaigns to repatriate over 12,000 alleged fugitives over the past decade. However, both Chinese authorities and Australia’s domestic spy agency, ASIO, remain silent on the revelations.
