A new biogas plant in Dhangadhi Submetropolis-2, Kailali, has commenced the production of organic fertilizer and cooking gas. This initiative, supported by the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre and funded by the World Bank, utilizes biodegradable waste to generate sustainable energy and fertilizer.
According to Rabin Pant, Executive Director of the Dev Training and Management Service Centre, the plant’s commercial production has begun. The facility has a daily production capacity of 3,500 kilograms of fertilizer and 1,000 kilograms of cooking gas. Currently, it produces 2,000 kilograms of fertilizer and 500 kilograms of cooking gas daily. The market price for the fertilizer is Rs 20 per kilogram, while a cylinder of cooking gas costs Rs 1,450.
Pant explained that while the plant is capable of operating at full capacity, production is currently limited due to market constraints. “Production will be increased in line with demand,” he said.
The plant uses 30,000 kilograms of waste collected from local government sources, agricultural, and industrial sectors. It was established last year with an investment of approximately Rs 210 million, funded collaboratively by the World Bank, the Centre, Dhangadhi Promotion Centre, and the private sector. The government holds a 40 percent stake, and the Dev Training and Management Service Centre holds 60 percent. Ownership of the plant will be transferred to the local government after 20 years of operation.
