Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Reportedly Set to Resign This Week

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce his resignation this week amid growing dissent within his Liberal Party, The Globe and Mail reported on Sunday.

According to the report, which cites three anonymous sources familiar with internal party discussions, Trudeau’s resignation could be announced as early as Monday. The timing would likely precede a national Liberal Party caucus meeting scheduled for Wednesday.

It remains unclear whether Trudeau would serve in an interim capacity while the party selects new leadership. His popularity has waned in recent months, with his government narrowly surviving several no-confidence votes and critics calling for his departure.

Trudeau had previously committed to leading the Liberals into the next federal election set for October 2025. However, mounting challenges, including pressure from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, have intensified calls for change. Trump has threatened a 25% tariff on Canadian goods, further straining political and economic relations between the two countries.

The resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland in December—reportedly over disagreements on handling Trump’s trade policy—marked the first significant cabinet-level dissent against Trudeau. In a subsequent effort to stabilize his government, Trudeau announced a major cabinet reshuffle, replacing one-third of his ministers.

Trudeau’s political standing has also been undermined by Trump’s social media barbs, where the president-elect referred to Trudeau as the “governor” of Canada and suggested making Canada the 51st U.S. state.

Trudeau, who rose to power in 2015 with a dynamic public image, has seen his approval ratings plummet. He now trails Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre by 20 points in opinion polls.

During his tenure, Trudeau achieved significant milestones, including legalizing cannabis, enacting a carbon tax, reforming the Senate, and passing legislation on medically assisted suicide. He also led a public inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women and signed a landmark trade deal with the United States.

Trudeau’s anticipated departure marks the end of an era for the Liberals, who must now navigate a leadership transition while facing growing political challenges on both domestic and international fronts.
