Caution Urged in Nepal-China Agreements: Experts Weigh In

Economic experts have called for careful consideration when negotiating and implementing agreements between Nepal and China, emphasizing the evolving technological landscape and shifting political consciousness.

During a recent event, these experts stressed the importance of Nepal-China relations, cooperation, development, and prosperity. Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ is currently on an official visit to China, marking his first visit to the neighboring country in nearly ten months since taking office for the third time.

Economist Dr. Chandramani Adhikari underscored the need to prioritize economic, social, and commercial relations while safeguarding national sovereignty, self-respect, and integrity in any bilateral agreements. He highlighted the unique position of Nepal, situated between two major world powers, and urged careful consideration of various aspects such as power dynamics, politics, resources, markets, potential, and technology.

Rajeshwar Acharya, Nepal’s former ambassador to China, stressed that every agreement should align with the national interest and benefit the country. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that any assistance received contributes to improving the country’s economic conditions, bolstering purchasing power, increasing employment opportunities, enhancing people’s well-being, and strengthening the nation’s economy.

Former Vice Chairman of the National Planning Commission, Dr. Govindaraj Pokharel, urged Prime Minister Dahal to negotiate agreements during his China visit that would facilitate the presence of Nepali products in the Chinese market, further promoting economic ties between the two nations.
