China’s Communist Party Expels Two Former Defense Ministers for Corruption

The Chinese Communist Party has expelled former defense ministers Li Shangfu and Wei Fenghe for “serious violations of discipline,” commonly understood as corruption, according to state news agency Xinhua.

Li was accused of taking substantial bribes and failing to fulfill political responsibilities, while Wei faced similar allegations. An investigation revealed that both officials sought improper benefits for themselves and others.

Li was ousted as defense minister last October amid a corruption probe into military procurement. Wei, who led the PLA Rocket Force from 2015-2017, disappeared from public view after his replacement last March. Both officials’ cases have been handed over to military prosecutors.

President Xi Jinping has spearheaded a significant anti-corruption campaign within the military, targeting high-ranking officials and emphasizing a zero-tolerance approach.

The Politburo approved the expulsions, which will be officially confirmed at the party’s Third Plenum in mid-July. This move underscores China’s ongoing efforts to root out corruption and ensure accountability within its ranks.

Both Li and Wei were also stripped of their membership in the national legislative body. Xi recently highlighted deep-seated political issues within the PLA and committed to eradicating corrupt practices.
