China’s Former Justice Minister Tang Yijun Expelled from Communist Party Amid Corruption Allegations

China’s top anti-corruption body announced on Monday that former Justice Minister Tang Yijun has been expelled from the Communist Party following an investigation into corruption charges, including illicit income and abuse of power.

The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) launched its inquiry into Tang in April over “serious disciplinary violations.” The commission’s statement described his conduct as “serious and harmful,” warranting severe punishment. Tang’s alleged illegal income has also been confiscated.

Tang Yijun held various party positions in Zhejiang province, where President Xi Jinping once served as party boss. Before his role as justice minister from April 2020 to early 2023, Tang was the governor of Liaoning province.

His expulsion highlights China’s ongoing efforts to crack down on corruption within the party’s ranks.
