‘Coalition Government Treading Towards Autocracy’
In a recent address, Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has voiced growing concerns over what he perceives as the coalition government’s alarming drift towards autocracy. Speaking at a program organized by the Press Union in Kathmandu, Thapa underscored the need for vigilance against unchecked governmental behavior that threatens the hard-won democratic gains of the nation.
Thapa’s remarks pointedly highlighted the worrisome conduct exhibited by the coalition government, cautioning that such actions pose a significant risk to the democratic fabric of the country. “Our protests against the government’s behavior signify our concerns. The unchecked behavior observed within the current coalition is undemocratic,” asserted the NC General Secretary.
Central to Thapa’s concerns was the issue of press freedom, which he emphasized as fundamental to the functioning of democracy. He warned against any attempts to stifle or control the media, emphasizing its pivotal role as the cornerstone of a free society.
Moreover, Thapa condemned the government’s purported efforts to silence opposition voices within parliament and hinder external scrutiny. “Controlling opposition voices in parliament, suppressing external inquiries—if the media is controlled based on the content they publish, it raises serious questions about our direction,” Thapa emphasized.
