Cold Wave and Dense Fog Disrupt Life in Tarai Madhes
A persistent cold wave and dense fog have severely disrupted daily life in the Tarai Madhes region, impacting residents, livestock, and crops alike.
The harsh weather conditions, ongoing for several days, have reduced outdoor activities and significantly affected normal routines, as shared by 80-year-old Bahadur Mahara from Jaleshwar Municipality-8. Similar concerns were voiced by Anil Sah, a farmer from Jaleshwar-4, who noted that both urban centers like Jaleshwar and rural areas in Mahottari district are seeing decreased movement and activity.
The adverse weather has led to increased demand for tea and warm clothing, as observed in local markets. “The sale of tea and winter garments has surged,” said Suresh Sah, a tea shop owner in Jaleshwar-2.
The health sector is also witnessing a rise in cases of respiratory ailments, cough, and cold, particularly among vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and new mothers, according to Dr. Rabindra Saha of the District Hospital.
In response, local governments in Mahottari district, which comprises 10 municipalities and five rural municipalities, have set up community fires at various locations to provide relief for the underprivileged and needy.
Farmers in the region are bearing the brunt of the cold wave, with crops such as lentils, oilseeds, and vegetables suffering from the unfavorable conditions. “The cold wave is taking a toll on our crops,” lamented Umesh Mandal, a farmer from Jaleshwar-11.
Efforts are underway to mitigate the impact of the severe weather, but residents and authorities alike are bracing for continued challenges as the cold wave persists.
