Decoding the Decision: What Led to Sandeep Lamichhane’s Acquittal?
Cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane has been acquitted by the High Court, overturning the verdict of the District Court Kathmandu in the rape case against him. The joint bench of Judges Sudarsan Dev Bhatta and Anju Dhakal declared Lamichhane not guilty on two pivotal grounds.
Firstly, the court found that the claim of the victim, known as ‘Gaushala 26,’ being a minor, lacked substantial evidence. Secondly, the assertion of coercion was not substantiated by the presented evidence.
Initially, the district court had sentenced Lamichhane to 8 years in prison based on the case filed by ‘Gaushala 26.’ However, Sandeep appealed this decision, seeking justice through the higher court.
Upon his acquittal, Lamichhane expressed a profound sense of relief, emphasizing that justice has finally prevailed after a prolonged legal battle. He reaffirmed his trust in the judicial system and conveyed his determination to move forward positively.
The verdict not only clears Lamichhane’s name but also paves the way for his return to cricket. The Nepal Cricket Association had suspended him following the district court’s ruling. However, with the High Court’s decision, the suspension can be immediately lifted, enabling Sandeep to pursue his cricketing career once again. His eligibility to participate in events like the upcoming T20 World Cup has been reinstated, marking a significant development in his professional journey.
