Deuba’s Reassurance: Don’t Be Afraid, I Can’t Run for President Again

Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has addressed concerns regarding his potential candidacy for a third term as party president, stating that he will not be able to contest for the position again.

Speaking at the 11th convention of the Democratic Lawyers Association (DLA) in Chitwan, Deuba assured party leaders to not afraid as he supports the existing provision in the party statute that restricts an individual from serving as president for more than two terms.

The Nepali Congress party statute explicitly states that a president cannot hold the position for more than two terms. Deuba reassured party members that he has no intention of advocating for the removal of this provision, in contrast to the recent actions taken by the Unified Marxist-Leninist (UML) party, which removed the age limit of 70 years for its leadership positions.

Emphasizing the importance of unity within the party, Deuba urged all leaders to cooperate and work together for the betterment of the Nepali Congress. During the DLA convention, which commenced on Friday, Deuba encouraged the adoption of consensus leadership wherever possible. However, if consensus cannot be reached, he suggested holding fair elections to determine the party’s leadership.
