Dr. Shashank Koirala Hosts Tea Reception to Mark Democracy Day

Former General Secretary of the Nepali Congress, Dr. Shashank Koirala, organized a tea reception at his residence in Maharajgunj on the occasion of Democracy Day, bringing together several senior and influential party leaders and cadres.

The event, held on Thursday, was attended by prominent figures within the party including former Vice Presidents Gopalman Shrestha, Bimalendra Nidhi, and Vijay Kumar Gachhadar, as well as former General Secretary Krishna Prasad Sitaula. Also present were leaders NP Saud, Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat, Deepak Giri, Mahesh Acharya, Energy Minister Deepak Khadka, Shiv Prasad Humagain, Pushpa Bhusal, Ambika Basnet, Urmila Thapaliya, and Guru Baral, among others.

Photos from the gathering were shared by Dr. Koirala on his official Facebook page, highlighting the significant presence of high-profile Congress figures.

The tea reception is being interpreted as politically significant, especially in light of the upcoming 15th General Convention of the Nepali Congress. Dr. Koirala, who is the son of BP Koirala, Nepal’s first elected prime minister, has recently engaged in discussions with fellow second-generation leaders, including Prakashman Singh, son of Ganeshman Singh, and Bimalendra Nidhi, son of Mahendra Narayan Nidhi.

Their emerging collaboration has sparked conversation within the party ranks, with many calling for a shift in leadership dynamics—arguing that the time has come for the party to move beyond legacy politics and hereditary succession, and to entrust leadership to capable second-generation leaders.
