Experts Highlight Chure Conservation as Key to Madhesh Prosperity
Conservation of the Chure region has been emphasized as crucial for ensuring the prosperity of Madhesh Province. Experts underscored this during a two-day orientation on “Chure Conservation and Development” held in Bardibas, organized by the Specialized Research Centre of the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST).
Experts pointed out that the daily lives of Madhesh residents are deeply tied to the Chure region, particularly in areas like energy, drinking water, environment, and irrigation. They highlighted the need for a collective responsibility to conserve this critical region.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Sohan Prasad Shah, Vice Chair of the Madhesh Province Policy and Planning Commission, stressed the intertwined relationship between the Chure and Madhesh. He called for prioritizing Chure conservation as a foundation for sustainable livelihoods and prosperity in the region.
On the concluding day, Dr. Nagendra Prasad Yadav, a conservation expert, outlined the challenges facing the Chure and urged the three-tier government and stakeholders to implement strategic programs for sustainable solutions. He emphasized the necessity of clear policies and their proper implementation for responsible utilization of the Chure’s natural resources.
The session “Chure Conservation: Whose Concern, Whose Responsibility?” was moderated by Dr. Binod Bhatta, an expert on Chure and climate change. Dr. Bhatta presented a working paper emphasizing science-based solutions for Chure conservation.
Additionally, Nagdev Yadav showcased successful local-level practices, such as controlling rivulets, creating water refilling ponds, mitigating landslides, and afforestation, which have positively impacted the Chure’s forests, watersheds, and surrounding areas.
The experts collectively stressed the need to base conservation efforts on applied science and foster collaboration among the government, communities, and relevant stakeholders.
Dr. Rabindra Prasad Dhakal, Secretary of NAST, also attended the event, reinforcing the importance of Chure conservation for Madhesh’s long-term prosperity and environmental sustainability.
