Finance Committee Members Voice Concerns Over Slow Development in Lumbini

Members of the Finance Committee under the House of Representatives, led by Committee President Santosh Chalise, visited Lumbini on Sunday to assess its development progress.

The delegation, which included several federal lawmakers, visited the Mayadevi Temple and other key sites in Lumbini, expressing concern over the slow pace of development in the revered pilgrimage site, considered sacred by Buddhists worldwide.

Sanu Raja Shakya, Member-Secretary of the Lumbini Development Trust (LDT), welcomed the lawmakers and provided updates on the status of the Lumbini Master Plan, noting that 88% of the project has been completed.

Speaking during the visit, Finance Committee member Surya Thapa highlighted the global significance of Lumbini as a spiritual and cultural hub for Buddhists and peace advocates. He assured that the committee would address the funding constraints that have hindered the completion of the remaining works.

Shakya emphasized Lumbini’s archaeological, religious, and cultural importance, expressing concern over declining budget allocations in recent years. He urged the lawmakers to prioritize the completion of the remaining portions of the master plan.

The team also visited key landmarks, including the holy Pushkarani Pond, the Ashoka Pillar, and surrounding monastery areas, while offering prayers at the Mayadevi Temple.

The visit underscores growing concerns about ensuring adequate financial and strategic focus on Lumbini, which holds immense religious and historical value as the birthplace of Gautama Buddha.
