The Family Planning Association of Nepal (FPAN) has endorsed a proposal to amend several provisions of its statute during a special general assembly convened to deliberate on the organization’s future direction.
The assembly was attended by FPAN district presidents from 28 districts, central office-bearers, and members of the central working committee. Discussions focused not only on statutory amendments but also on strategies to ensure sustainability and enhanced service delivery.
On the occasion, FPAN President Rajendra Bahadur Shrestha emphasized the importance of collective action to build the organization’s self-reliance. Similarly, Executive Director Dr. Praveen Shakya provided an overview of FPAN’s ongoing programs, as outlined in a press release issued by the association.
Treasurer Nirman Kumar Shrestha and central committee member Kamala Sapkota echoed the need for sustainable operations, calling for increased engagement with donor agencies to strengthen financial and programmatic support.
Established in 2016 BS by pioneering social worker Dwarika Devi Thakurani, FPAN is Nepal’s foremost organization providing sexual and reproductive health and family planning services. It currently operates in 31 districts, reaching communities in over 350 municipalities and rural municipalities, with a strong focus on marginalized and vulnerable populations. Notably, over 80% of its service providers come from the very communities they serve.
FPAN has also adopted a strategic plan for 2023–2028, which focuses on inclusive family planning services, comprehensive sexuality education, institutional development, and long-term sustainability. These initiatives are aligned with Nepal’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The association continues to commemorate September 18 as National Family Planning Day, marking the launch of Nepal’s family planning program in 1959.
