Government Action Leaves CIB Ineffective: UML’s Giri

CPN-UML MP Padam Giri has accused Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ of advocating for good governance in words, while in practice, according impunity to corrupt individuals.

Speaking during a special session of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Giri alleged that individuals closely associated with the Prime Minister and implicated in the gold smuggling case had not been subjected to questioning.

“The CIB has now become ineffective,” he stated, adding, “The CIB is incapable of conducting investigations, even when leaders of the ruling party come under suspicion.”

Giri, who also serves as the chief whip of the UML parliamentary party, claimed that high-ranking leaders of various political parties were being granted immunity without undergoing investigation. He further remarked, “Meanwhile, efforts are underway to imprison individuals who perform menial tasks.”

He contended that Nepali Congress MP Sunil Sharma was arrested without an arrest warrant, despite his vocal support for justice and good governance.

MP Giri highlighted that due to unchecked smuggling, the achievements of the republic and other significant milestones have been eroded.

He also voiced concerns about individuals arrested in the Lalita nivas land irregularity case, who were held in custody for 60 days without facing charges related to organized crime; instead, they were only accused of stealing government documents. He questioned, “Is this treatment equitable?” and added, “He was detained for 60 days without facing prosecution for organized crime.”
