Govt serious about telecom network issues in mountainous areas: Minister Sharma

Minister for Communications and Information Technology Rekha Sharma has expressed her interest to address the telecom network issues prevailing in the mountainous areas of the country.

Affixing a postal stamp published by the Department of Postal Services marking the 70th year of the successful ascend of Sagarmatha (Mt Everest) here today, Minister Sharma reiterated that she had taken cognizance of the network issues facing the users in the Everest Base Camp area and above.

“Complaints are rife about the network problem in the base camp of the mountains. Lack of proper telecom services has caused dire problems for the people,” said Minister Sharma.

Sharma, also the Spokesperson of the government, admitted that her attention was drawn towards this issue as well as the clean-up drive in the mountain and she had taken them into her consideration so as to deliver on them.

Stating that Nepal was an important destination from tourism prospects and mountaineering was a matter of pride for the Nepalis, she opined that mountaineering holds tremendous potential for adventure enthusiasts.

“Mountain climbing is related to the national economy and thus it is an important issue. There is still no adequate publicity about mountains in Nepal,” she said, calling for more publicity of adventure sports in Nepal including mountain climbing.

It may be noted that Nepal is home to 8 of 14 high mountains over 8,000 metres including the highest mountain- Sagarmatha or Mt Everest.
