Haze Disrupts Flights at Tribhuvan International Airport

Flight operations at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) have been significantly affected due to reduced visibility caused by persistent haze over Kathmandu.

According to Jagannath Niraula, Chief and General Manager of TIA, the thick foggy conditions over the past few days have lowered visibility, compelling aircraft to rely on Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) technology for takeoff and landing.

“Flights are operating using IFR technology due to the low visibility caused by haze,” Niraula stated, adding that while no flights have been canceled so far, visibility at the airport has dropped to 3,000 meters.

The haze has also forced several flight diversions. Today, three mountain flights of Buddha Air, along with one flight each from Yeti Airlines and Shree Airlines, were rerouted to Bhairahawa and Janakpur.
