Health Institutions in Madhes Province Struggle Amid Drug Shortage

State-run health institutions across Madhes Province are grappling with a severe shortage of essential medicines due to delays in procurement by the provincial Health Supplies Centre.

According to officials, frequent changes in leadership at the Health Supplies Centre—operating under the Ministry of Health and Population—have led to internal disputes and disruptions in the drug procurement process. The result: critical shortages impacting patient care, particularly for economically disadvantaged communities.

Hospitals in various districts of the province are currently managing services by purchasing medicines using their own limited internal funds. However, hospital administrators say they are unable to provide free medication as mandated by the government due to dwindling resources.

Adding to the crisis, laboratories established in 136 local levels under the Province Public Health Laboratory are running low on essential testing kits, putting diagnostic services at risk.

Chief Minister Satish Kumar Singh acknowledged the situation and said steps have been initiated to address the supply issue. He expressed hope that medicines will be made available soon.

The government has committed to offering 98 essential drugs free of charge, but at present, only about half are being distributed to patients across the province.
