Heatwave Forces School Closures in Kailali

In response to scorching temperatures surpassing 43 degrees Celsius, authorities in Kailali district have taken decisive action, shutting down schools to safeguard students from heat-related health issues. The Kathmandu Post reveals that Kailali witnessed a staggering peak temperature of 43.36 degrees Celsius this Wednesday, marking the first occurrence of such extreme heat in nearly three decades.

Reports indicate that the decision to suspend classes came after numerous students fell ill due to the oppressive heat. This drastic measure reflects the seriousness of the situation in the region, where last year’s highest recorded temperature was 41 degrees Celsius.

Tikapur and Lamkichuwa municipalities have taken the lead in implementing the closures, effective immediately until June 3. Furthermore, Tikapur’s institutional schools are set to remain closed until June 8, with community schools bracing for a holiday from June 9 onward.

However, some schools in Janaki and Joshipur rural municipalities have opted to adapt by adjusting their schedules. They are conducting classes solely in the mornings, capitalizing on cooler temperatures to minimize health risks for students and staff alike.
