Heightened Security in Kathmandu as RPP Prepares for Protest

Authorities have ramped up security across key restricted zones in Kathmandu today in response to a planned protest by the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), which is demanding the restoration of the monarchy.

Security personnel have been deployed in areas under a two-month-long prohibitory order, including the vicinity of the Federal Parliament, Singha Durbar, the offices of the President and Vice President, the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar, and the Bhadrakali area. The order—imposed in late Falgun—bars gatherings of more than five people, along with chanting slogans, organizing rallies, sit-ins, or any form of demonstration within these zones.

Kathmandu Police Range Spokesperson SP Apilraj Bohora confirmed that security measures have been intensified since early this morning. Traffic police have also been actively coordinating to manage vehicle movement and prevent disruptions.

The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a stern warning Saturday evening, cautioning that any violation of the restricted zones or engagement in unlawful activities will result in strict legal action. The Ministry further noted that it is closely monitoring statements from RPP leaders that threaten to defy the restrictions.

Today’s protest is part of the RPP’s broader phased agitation campaign calling for a return to the monarchy. The party previously held protests in Balkhu on Chaitra 26 and in Tinkune on Chaitra 15.

The Tinkune demonstration had escalated into violence, prompting police to arrest RPP Senior Vice President Rabindra Mishra and party General Secretary and MP Dhawal Shamsheer Rana. The clash also resulted in the deaths of two individuals, including a journalist.

Authorities remain on high alert as tensions simmer between security forces and protestors amid mounting political demands.
