Home Minister Pledges Tough Action Against Attacks on Journalists

Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has vowed strict action against those responsible for the violent attacks on journalists and media houses during the March 28 demonstration at Tinkune, Kathmandu. He assured that a fair investigation would identify and hold accountable those behind the assaults.

Lekhak made this commitment during a meeting with a delegation led by General Secretary of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), Ram Prasad Dahal, on Wednesday. The FNJ team submitted a memorandum, urging the government to take decisive action against the perpetrators.

Describing the demonstration as anarchic and lacking ideology, Lekhak condemned the violence, emphasizing that the mob had clear criminal intent. He stated that the protesters crossed all limits, directly endangering journalists and media houses, and reaffirmed the government’s serious stance on the issue.

He also provided updates on relief measures for the family of journalist Suresh Rajak, who lost his life, and another journalist who was injured during the protest.

FNJ General Secretary Dahal urged the Home Minister to conduct a thorough investigation into the attacks on media personnel and the death of the on-duty journalist, stressing the need for strong legal action against those responsible. The Home Minister’s secretariat later confirmed these discussions.
