Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak Highlights Unusual Coalition of Nepal’s Largest Parties
Minister for Home Affairs, Ramesh Lekhak, acknowledged that it is uncommon for the first and second largest political parties in a country to join hands to form a coalition government. Speaking at a news conference organized by Press Union Kailali at Dhangadhi Airport today, Home Minister Lekhak emphasized that the collaboration between the CPN (UML) and the Nepali Congress, Nepal’s two largest parties, was formed under special circumstances.
“Typically, in parliamentary practice, the largest and second-largest parties do not form a government together. However, we have done so during a unique situation,” the Minister remarked. He pointed out that historically, when these two parties have come together, the country has seen significant progress, citing instances where both parties united to address critical national issues.
Minister Lekhak underscored the importance of creating a stable political equation for effective governance. He noted that the recent coalition was formed with the aim of revitalizing the economy, establishing good governance, accelerating development activities, and upholding the rule of law.
“The Nepali Congress and CPN (UML) have a history of working together for the nation’s greater good,” the Minister added, recalling their joint efforts in drafting the constitution, fighting against the Panchayat system, establishing multi-party democracy, and transforming the 10-year armed conflict into peace.
The Home Minister’s remarks come at a time when the coalition government is focused on addressing the country’s pressing challenges, emphasizing the need for unity and collaboration among political forces for the nation’s stability and development.
