Hospital Built in Upper Mustang, But Lacks Equipment and Staff

A five-bed basic hospital has been constructed in Lomanthang Rural Municipality, Upper Mustang, but it remains non-operational due to a lack of medical equipment and human resources.

The two-and-a-half-story hospital was built under the Integrated Health Infrastructure Development Programme with joint investment from the federal government and the rural municipality. The contract was signed in fiscal year 2078/79 BS, with a two-year deadline. However, delays, including the COVID-19 pandemic, postponed its completion.

Located near Lomanthang town, the 27-room hospital was built at a cost of Rs 71.9 million. It features an operation theatre, X-ray room, laboratory, maternity ward, pharmacy, and staff quarters for doctors and health workers, said Officiating Chief of the Rural Municipality, Bikas KC.

Despite the completion of infrastructure, Chairperson Tashi Narbu Gurung stated that the hospital cannot function without essential medical equipment and staff. He urged the federal and provincial governments to step in and provide the necessary support to ensure healthcare services for Upper Mustang residents.
