‘I Will Continue My Endeavor’: Thapa’s Unwavering Commitment to Change PP Leader

Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has expressed his determination to continue his efforts to become the parliamentary party (PP) leader and Prime Minister, stating that he has not given up on his aspirations.

During a program held in Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu on Saturday, Thapa addressed the audience, emphasizing that he remains undeterred despite his previous defeat as the PP leader.

Thapa stated, “I want to make it unequivocally clear that I contested for the PP leadership because I believed that the existing leadership needed to be changed. Although I could not convince all my colleagues, I am not disheartened nor defeated.” He further declared, “I will persist in my endeavors since the underlying reasons for seeking the PP leadership remain unchanged.”

Highlighting the current trend of selecting the Prime Minister from former Prime Ministers in Nepal, Thapa assured that if the NC assumes leadership of the government, this practice must be altered.

“When the NC gets the opportunity to lead the government, we should not have another former Prime Minister from our party assume the position of Prime Minister,” asserted General Secretary Thapa. He pledged, “I will exert my utmost efforts to bring about this change. The leadership should be passed on to leaders from my generation or younger.”

Thapa also recounted the instances when, after the Constituent Assembly elections of 2064, Ram Chandra Paudel was made parliamentary party leader, holding the position as long as there was a slim chance of becoming Prime Minister. However, when the NC had a more promising chance of securing the Prime Minister’s post, the leadership was once again entrusted to Sher Bahadur Deuba.
