Iih Withdraws ‘Standing’ Protests Following Agreement with KMC
After an intensive four-point agreement was reached between Iih, a dedicated social activist and campaigner, and the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC), a notable protest has come to a halt. Iih had been conducting a standing protest in front of the KMC office, City Hall, advocating for alternative arrangements to accommodate street vendors.
The signed agreement, formalized by Iih and executive committee member Chinikaji Marhajan on behalf of the KMC, signifies a significant step towards resolving the issue.
With this accord in place, Iih has officially announced the postponement of their protest programs, which had seen them standing continuously in front of the KMC office for an astounding 199 hours.
The agreement outlines several key points:
- The items confiscated from street vendors will be returned by the metropolis to their respective owners.
- A committee will be established to determine suitable locations, timing, and individuals who can engage in street vending. This committee will also devise methods, procedures, and legal frameworks for providing the designated areas. A comprehensive report will be submitted to the KMC within two months. It is crucial to note that the designated locations for street vendors will adhere to the law.
- The committee will comprise three members appointed by the KMC, two representatives on behalf of campaigner Iih, and one representative each from the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, the Ministry of Urban Development, the Traffic Police, and street vendors.
This agreement signifies a constructive step toward addressing the concerns of street vendors and ensuring their rights are upheld, while also maintaining law and order in the city.
The peaceful resolution achieved through dialogue and negotiation reflects the spirit of cooperation and compromise that can pave the way for improved urban governance and harmony among stakeholders.
The Kathmandu Metropolitan City and Iih, as well as other involved parties, are hopeful that this agreement will lead to the effective regulation of street vending in the city, providing opportunities for vendors while ensuring a clean and organized urban environment.
The resolution of this matter demonstrates the power of dialogue and cooperation in addressing social issues and fostering positive change in our communities.
