India Assures Full Support After Death of Nepali Student in Bhubaneswar

The Government of India has expressed deep sorrow over the death of a Nepali student enrolled at KIIT University in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, and pledged full support to the bereaved family and concerned authorities.

In an official statement issued Friday, the Ministry of External Affairs extended heartfelt condolences and confirmed it has been in constant contact with the Odisha State Government since the incident came to light.

The Odisha Police is conducting a thorough investigation into the student’s death, and the state authorities have assured full cooperation to the family, the statement noted.

“The Government of India takes the safety, security and well-being of all international students very seriously,” the Ministry emphasized, adding that close coordination is ongoing with the Nepali authorities, KIIT University management, and the Odisha Government to ensure transparency and real-time communication.

Prisa Sah, an 18-year-old Nepali student in her first year of undergraduate studies at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Odisha, India, has been found dead. The Nepali Embassy in New Delhi has confirmed that she was discovered hanging in her hostel room.

In a press release, the embassy stated that it is taking the incident seriously and is actively involved in investigation and coordination efforts. The incident was reportedly discovered on the night of May 1, 2025. Following the report, the embassy held discussions this morning with the chief academic officers of KIIT, the International Student Coordinator, the Hostel Manager, and other concerned individuals.

According to the initial information provided during these discussions, Prisa Sah was found hanging. A detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death is currently underway. The embassy immediately contacted the deceased’s mother, Mrs. Neetu Devi Mandal, to inform her of the tragic event. It also noted that ongoing coordination with the family is being maintained and preparations are being made to provide necessary assistance.

In this regard, the embassy remains in constant communication with the Odisha State Government, the Chief Minister’s Office, and other relevant Indian authorities. It affirmed that all necessary measures are being taken to support the investigation, acknowledging the seriousness of the incident. In the statement, Nepali Ambassador Dr. Shankar Sharma paid tribute to the late Prisa Sah and expressed his heartfelt condolences to her grieving family.
