India Begins Delivery of BrahMos Missiles to Philippines Amid Regional Tensions

In a significant move aimed at bolstering defense ties and strategic cooperation, India has commenced the delivery of supersonic cruise missiles to the Philippines. The delivery comes against the backdrop of escalating tensions between the Southeast Asian nation and China over maritime disputes in the South China Sea.

Under a deal valued at $375 million signed in 2022, the Philippines is acquiring BrahMos missiles, marking India’s first export of these advanced defense systems. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the milestone during an election rally on Friday, stating, “Now we are also exporting BrahMos missiles. The first batch of this missile is going to the Philippines today.”

The defense collaboration between India and the Philippines has intensified amid growing concerns over China’s assertiveness in the region. Beijing’s claims to areas within Manila’s exclusive economic zone have fueled tensions, prompting both countries to seek enhanced security measures.

Analysts suggest that India’s involvement in supplying BrahMos missiles to the Philippines aligns with its broader strategy of countering China’s expanding influence in the South China Sea. Sreeram Chaulia, dean of the Jindal School of International Affairs, describes it as a “lattice work strategy,” emphasizing India’s role in bolstering the security of smaller nations like the Philippines within a coalition of like-minded countries.

The BrahMos missiles, produced under a joint venture with Russia, are shore-based anti-ship systems with a range of 290 kilometers. India will supply three versions of the missile system as part of the agreement. Jonathan Malaya, assistant director-general of the Philippine National Security Council, revealed that the missiles will be deployed by the Philippine Marines, enhancing the country’s coastal defense capabilities.

Geopolitical analyst Don McLain Gill emphasizes the strategic significance of the missile delivery, stating that it provides an essential layer of deterrence for the Philippines amidst limited military resources, particularly in the face of China’s expansionist ambitions.

The burgeoning defense cooperation between India and the Philippines also underscores India’s expanding role beyond the Indian Ocean to contribute to stability in the Indo-Pacific region. During a recent visit to Manila, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar reiterated India’s support for upholding the Philippines’ national sovereignty, emphasizing shared interests in a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific.

India’s decision to export BrahMos missiles to the Philippines represents a shift in its policy regarding advanced defense exports. Previously hesitant due to concerns about provoking Beijing, India has now taken a more assertive stance, reflecting a broader strategic recalibration in response to regional challenges.
