India Hands Over Vaccines for Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Disease to Nepal

The Government of Nepal has received a consignment of vaccines from India aimed at preventing infections related to Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Disease. In a handover ceremony held at the Ministry of Health and Population today, Indian Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava formally handed over the vaccines to Health Minister Pradip Paudel.
In response to a request from the Government of Nepal, the Government of India will supply medicines and vaccines valued at USD 2 million to support the treatment of thalassemia and sickle cell disease patients, according to the Indian Embassy.
The first phase of the support includes 1,730 vials of five different vaccines—influenza, salmonella, meningococcus, Haemophilus influenzae, and streptococcus. These vaccines are known to significantly reduce the risk of complications and infections commonly associated with sickle cell anemia and thalassemia.
The initial consignment comprises 3,100 doses of influenza vaccine, 1,550 of Salmonella vaccine, 3,100 of meningococcus vaccine, 4,640 of Haemophilus influenzae vaccine, and 4,640 of Streptococcus pneumoniae vaccine.
Minister Paudel noted that approximately 12 percent of Nepal’s population suffers from these conditions, with the Tharu community being particularly vulnerable. He expressed hope that the vaccine support would have a meaningful impact. “We’ve also made preparations to provide treatment at Tikapur and Geta Hospitals,” he said, adding that India’s continued support in the health sector is deeply appreciated.
Ambassador Srivastava announced that a second batch of medical supplies is expected to arrive within the next four weeks. “India has always stood by Nepal in times of need,” he said. “These vaccines are being provided at the Minister’s request, with a special focus on aiding the Tharu community. In the past, we’ve also supported Nepal with 200 dialysis machines, and we are now preparing to extend assistance with cancer medicines as well.”
