Indian Army Pays Tribute to 1962 War Heroes with Month-Long Commemoration in Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh

The Indian Army organized a heartfelt commemorative event in Manipur’s Khurkul and Bethel High School, Moreh, to honor the soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the 1962 Sino-Indian War. This event, as part of a broader series of tributes, was aimed at fostering patriotism and respect for the Indian Armed Forces, according to a release from the Ministry of Defence.

The ceremony opened with a tribute to the fallen soldiers, featuring a presentation that highlighted the historical importance of the day and the valor of the soldiers who defended India’s borders. Students in attendance were urged to draw inspiration from these acts of bravery and to commit themselves to serving the nation with the same spirit of dedication.

A Month-Long Tribute: 62nd Walong Day Commemoration

The event is part of a series of month-long activities commemorating the 62nd anniversary of Walong Day, which began on October 17, 2024. These activities, designed to strengthen ties between the Army and local communities, will continue until November 14, 2024, culminating in a solemn ceremony at the renovated Walong War Memorial in Arunachal Pradesh.

Celebrating Courage Through Adventure and Community Engagement

A mix of adventurous and community-focused activities has been planned to honor the soldiers’ sacrifice while engaging the local population. These include white water rafting, motorcycle rallies, bicycle rallies, battlefield treks, adventure hikes, and a half marathon—reflecting the adventurous spirit of the Indian Army in the challenging terrain of Arunachal Pradesh.

In addition to these activities, medical and veterinary camps will be held in remote villages, providing much-needed support to local communities and further strengthening the bond between the Army and the people of the region.

Grand Finale on Walong Day

The month-long commemorative events will conclude on November 14 with the reopening of the newly renovated Walong War Memorial. The day will feature a solemn wreath-laying ceremony in remembrance of the brave soldiers, an evocative battle narration, and cultural performances by traditional Mishmi and Meyor dancers, showcasing the rich heritage of the region.

Key infrastructure projects in the border areas, including the Shaurya Sthal at Lama Spur, will also be inaugurated as part of ongoing efforts to improve connectivity and security in the region. A special ceremony will be held to honor the next of kin of war heroes, veterans, and the families of porters who played a crucial role in the 1962 operations.
