Indian High Commissioner to Brunei, Alok Amitabh Dimri, has described Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ongoing visit to Brunei as “historic,” emphasizing the deep civilizational ties between the two nations. PM Modi embarked on this visit on Tuesday, marking the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Brunei.
During his visit, PM Modi is expected to engage in high-level discussions with Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah and other members of the Royal Family. Speaking to ANI, High Commissioner Dimri highlighted the significance of this visit, noting that it comes as both countries celebrate 40 years of diplomatic relations.
“In our four decades of diplomatic relationship, this is the first bilateral official visit by the Prime Minister of India to Brunei Darussalam. It is a historic moment in our bilateral relationship and also for the Indian community in Brunei,” Dimri stated.
The High Commissioner further elaborated on the cultural and historical connections between India and Brunei, noting that the two nations have been “civilizational neighbours.” He pointed out that Brunei’s cultural traditions, including linguistic, architectural, and religious elements, have deep roots in Indian culture. For instance, the Indian manner of greeting, such as “namaskar” and “pranam,” is the official way to greet the Sultan in Brunei.
Dimri also mentioned the expected outcomes of the visit, including the signing of MoUs and a joint statement that will review and further enhance the bilateral relations between India and Brunei. He highlighted India’s space station in Brunei, which plays a crucial role in assisting ISRO with key satellite launches.
He spoke about the strong presence of the Indian diaspora in Brunei, despite the country’s small size and population. Various Indian communities, including Tamilians, Malayalis, Sindhis, Punjabis, Marathas, and Gujaratis, have made significant contributions to the local society and economy.
“Despite the small geography and economy, the Indian diaspora has been deeply entrenched here,” Dimri added, emphasizing the deep and friendly relations between the two countries.
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi will explore new areas of cooperation and strengthen existing ties, especially under India’s ‘Act East’ Policy and its Indo-Pacific vision. After concluding his visit to Brunei, PM Modi will continue his tour with a visit to Singapore from September 4-5.
