Indian Media Mogul Ramoji Rao Passes Away at 87

Cherukuri Ramoji Rao, the iconic founder of Ramoji Film City and a stalwart in India’s media and entertainment industry, breathed his last today at 4:50 am local time at Star Hospital in Hyderabad, Telangana. He was 87.

Rao, a visionary and recipient of the prestigious Padma Vibhushan award, had been undergoing treatment for a heart-related ailment. His demise marks the end of an era in Indian media.

Born on November 16, 1936, Rao was a multifaceted personality, excelling as a businessman, producer, and media tycoon. He spearheaded the Ramoji Group, which encompassed diverse ventures such as Eenadu, a prominent Telugu-language daily newspaper, ETV TV channels, Ramoji Film City, and the production house Usha Kiran Movies.

Beyond his media empire, Rao’s contributions extended to education with institutions like Ramadevi Public School, and hospitality with the Dolphin Group of Hotels, among others.

Following his passing, tributes poured in from across the spectrum. Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi hailed Rao as a visionary who revolutionized Indian media, setting new benchmarks for innovation and excellence. A-listers from the South Indian film industry, including Jr NTR and Chiranjeevi, expressed their grief and reminisced about Rao’s immense impact on their careers.

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy also conveyed his condolences, acknowledging Rao’s pivotal role in shaping Telugu journalism and industry.

Rao’s mortal remains have been moved to his residence in Ramoji Film City, where friends, family, and well-wishers will pay their final respects to the media maestro whose legacy will endure for generations to come.

The nation mourns the loss of a true pioneer in Indian media and entertainment. Cherukuri Ramoji Rao’s indelible mark on journalism and cinema will be cherished forever.
