Indian PM Modi Names Lunar Landing Sites as “Shiv Shakti Point” and Declares National Space Day

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a visit to the ISRO Telemetry Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) in Bengaluru, made significant announcements regarding India’s lunar exploration missions. The Prime Minister revealed that the spot on the Moon where the Chandrayaan-3’s lunar lander touched down will now be known as “Shiv Shakti point.” Additionally, the location where Chandrayaan-2’s lander left its footprints will be called “Tiranga.” These names carry symbolic significance, embodying strength and unity.

Explaining the significance of these names, PM Modi stated, “In Shiv, there is resolution for the welfare of humanity and Shakti gives us strength to fulfil those resolutions. This Shiv Shakti point of the moon also gives a sense of connection with Himalaya to Kanyakumari.” He emphasized that these names underscore India’s cultural and geographical diversity while resonating with the nation’s aspirations.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister declared that August 23, the date of Chandrayaan-3’s historic soft landing on the Moon, will be celebrated as “National Space Day.” This day will commemorate the spirit of science, technology, and innovation in India’s space endeavors, serving as a reminder of the country’s achievements in space exploration.

“The National Space Day will celebrate the spirit of Science, Technology and Innovation, and inspire us for an eternity,” PM Modi announced, highlighting the importance of fostering scientific temper and innovation among the youth.

Reflecting on the achievements of Chandrayaan-3, PM Modi commended the scientific spirit and technological prowess demonstrated by India. He emphasized that these accomplishments positioned India as a global leader in space exploration, fostering international recognition of the nation’s capabilities.

Addressing ISRO scientists, PM Modi acknowledged the significant contributions of women scientists in the success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission. He lauded ISRO’s role in India’s economic progress, noting that the nation has ascended to the ranks of the world’s first-world countries. In pursuit of further engagement with the youth, the Prime Minister called for national hackathons on space technology and encouraged students to participate in a quiz competition focused on the Chandrayaan mission.

PM Modi also urged the younger generation to explore and validate astronomical formulas present in India’s ancient scriptures. By bridging the gap between heritage and science, he highlighted the importance of preserving and sharing India’s scientific knowledge with the world.
