Japan Launches New Infectious Diseases Research Institute

Japan has established the Japan Institute for Health Security (JIHS) to enhance preparedness for future infectious disease crises. The institute was launched on Tuesday through the merger of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases and the National Center for Global Health and Medicine. It will be responsible for information analysis, research, and crisis response related to infectious diseases.
The JIHS will collect data on infectious diseases and conduct risk assessments during normal times while providing scientific findings to the government. In the event of an outbreak, the institute will collaborate with the government to develop drugs and vaccines and establish medical treatment guidelines.
By consolidating expertise from its predecessor institutions, the JIHS aims to strengthen Japan’s ability to respond swiftly to emerging health threats and ensure national health security.
