Karnali’s Organic Ginger and Turmeric Enter European Market
Ginger and turmeric from Karnali have reached the European market, marking a significant milestone for local agricultural products.
A ginger processing industry in Kalidamar, Bheriganga Municipality-5, Surkhet, has begun exporting its processed ginger and turmeric overseas. The industry sources raw materials directly from local farmers, addressing a long-standing issue of market accessibility for their produce.
Sulochana Shrestha, Managing Director of the processing industry, highlighted the high demand for organic and quality ginger produced in Karnali and Lumbini. “The demand in Europe ensures there is no problem with sales. Now, we must focus on boosting production to meet growing requirements,” Shrestha said.
The industry processes 1,500 metric tonnes of ginger and turmeric annually, involving over 1,400 local farmers. In the current fiscal year, ginger cultivation spans over 850 ropanis of land. The company aims to procure 2.2 million kilograms of ginger and export 230 tonnes of dried ginger to Europe.
This development has provided a stable market for local farmers, increasing their income and encouraging sustainable agricultural practices. The success of Karnali’s ginger in international markets underscores its potential as a high-value export, benefiting both the region’s economy and farming communities.
