Kathmandu Metropolitan City Denies Chinese Embassy Permission to Host New Year Event in Thamel

The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has declined the Chinese Embassy’s request to organize a Chinese New Year celebration in Thamel, citing concerns over traffic management and road congestion in the bustling area.

The embassy had submitted a proposal to the metropolis, seeking permission to host the month-long event in Thamel from January 26 to February 25. However, KMC rejected the request, emphasizing the logistical challenges of holding such a program in the popular tourist hub.

Bhupdev Sah, a member of the mayor’s secretariat, explained the decision, saying, “Due to limited space in Thamel and concerns over traffic congestion, we suggested relocating the event to the Kalanki-Maharajgunj road instead. It would be more suitable to organize the program there.”

The embassy had also proposed KMC as a co-organizer for the event, but the metropolis declined the offer. Despite the refusal, the city has encouraged the embassy to explore alternate venues to ensure smooth traffic flow and public convenience during the celebration.
