Kathmandu Sees Dip in Minimum Temperature, Cold Wave Expected in Tarai

The minimum temperature in the Kathmandu Valley dropped to 4.8 degrees Celsius on Saturday, following a brief period of warming. According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the dip in temperature is attributed to a high-pressure system in the atmosphere, which began influencing weather conditions on Friday.

The maximum temperature in Kathmandu, which was 21.5 degrees Celsius on Friday, dropped slightly to 20.5 degrees Celsius on Saturday. Earlier this week, on January 22, the valley had recorded a high of 24.6 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 6.2 degrees Celsius, reflecting a significant temperature fluctuation over recent days.

Meteorologist Saroj Pudasaini noted that while temperatures have fallen compared to previous days, they remain slightly above normal seasonal levels. He explained that the shift in the high-pressure system is responsible for the change, and similar temperatures are expected to persist for the next few days.

“In a high-pressure system, the weather remains warmer, whereas a low-pressure system leads to colder conditions. The recent shift has caused temperatures to drop,” said Pudasaini.

Looking ahead, Pudasaini predicted that the Tarai region will experience the impacts of a cold wave, accompanied by thick fog and mist, over the next three days. However, the system is unlikely to bring rain or snowfall.

Meanwhile, districts outside the Kathmandu Valley have also reported a noticeable decline in temperature, consistent with the broader weather trend across the country.
