KIIT University Suicide Case: Police Arrest Accused, Probe into Student Eviction Underway

The Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissionerate has launched an investigation into the tragic suicide of 20-year-old Nepali student Prakriti Lamsal at KIIT University on February 16, 2025. The incident has led to legal action, student protests, and the temporary eviction of Nepali students from their hostels.
According to the police, the complaint was filed by Prakriti’s cousin, Siddhant Sigdel, a third-year Mechanical Engineering student at KIIT University. The complaint alleged that Prakriti, a third-year Computer Science student, took her own life due to harassment by fellow student Advik Srivastava, a third-year Mechanical Engineering student.
Following the complaint, police registered a case under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and arrested Srivastava on February 17. He was remanded to judicial custody on the same day, and investigators have begun examining seized documents and electronic evidence.
In response to the incident, KIIT University declared a “sine die” closure on February 17, leading to the eviction of Nepali students from the hostels following their protests on campus. However, the university later withdrew the order and urged Nepali students to return.
Additionally, a case was filed against two KIIT security personnel, Ramakanta Nayak and Jogendra Behera, for allegedly manhandling students during the unrest. The two security guards were arrested under multiple sections of the BNS.
The Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissionerate has assured a fair and impartial investigation into both cases. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all students, including those from Nepal. Students facing difficulties have been encouraged to contact the police through their 24×7 helpline at 8280338301.
The tragic incident has sparked widespread concern, with calls for justice, improved student safety, and stronger institutional accountability.
