Krishna Bahadur Mahara Released Without Bail in Gold Smuggling Case
Krishna Bahadur Mahara, the former Speaker and Vice Chairman of the ruling CPN (Maoist Center), has been released without bail, subject to a condition requiring him to be present at the Crime Investigation Bureau (CIB) as and when needed.
Mahara’s release follows his arrest from Kapilvastu after the Gold Smuggling Probe Commission recommended legal actions against him. The Kathmandu District Court had initially granted permission for a four-day remand of Mahara to facilitate further investigation into the allegations against him.
However, Mahara’s medical condition prompted authorities to allow him to remain hospitalized, leading to his admission to Norvic Hospital.
During his time in custody, Mahara provided a statement at the public prosecutor’s office, vehemently denying his involvement in the gold smuggling case. Both the CIB and the public prosecutor’s office have concluded recording Mahara’s statement regarding his alleged connection to the gold smuggling case and have decided to release him.
Mahara’s release without bail has sparked discussions regarding the ongoing investigation and the potential ramifications on the political landscape of Nepal. As Mahara resumes his activities, the public awaits further developments in this high-profile case.
