KU Affiliates B&C Medical College, a Triumph for Durga Prasai
B&C Medical College, situated in Birtamod, Jhapa, has secured affiliation from Kathmandu University. This milestone marks a triumph for businessman Durga Prasai, the owner of the institution, as it paves the way for enhanced medical education and healthcare services in the region.
The decision to grant affiliation was made during the Executive Council meeting of Kathmandu University, held on Monday, following a directive order from the Supreme Court. The college will now be officially known as B&C Medical College Teaching Hospital and Research Center, reflecting its expanded role in healthcare and academia.
The Supreme Court’s directive, issued by a division bench of Justices Dr. Kumar Chudal and Saranga Subedi, mandated Kathmandu University, Kavrepalanchok, and the Medical Education Commission, Bhaktapur, to ensure compliance with established standards. This move underscores the judiciary’s commitment to upholding quality standards in medical education, as outlined by the government over a decade ago.
The journey towards affiliation has been arduous, with B&C Medical College diligently adhering to regulatory requirements. Despite possessing the necessary infrastructure, challenges persisted, leading to a writ petition filed by Durga Prasai against Kathmandu University and the Medical Education Commission. The subsequent Supreme Court order validated the college’s efforts and underscored the importance of procedural fairness in the education sector.
This development not only signifies a personal victory for Durga Prasai but also holds promise for aspiring medical professionals and the broader community. With the attainment of affiliation, B&C Medical College is poised to play a pivotal role in addressing the region’s healthcare needs and shaping the future of medical education in Nepal.
