Late Subas Nemwang: A Break from a Half-Century-Long Political Journey

In a somber moment for the nation, Subas Nemwang, a stalwart of Nepali politics, breathed his last after suffering a heart attack. His untimely demise marked the end of a political journey that spanned over half a century, leaving an indelible mark on the country’s political landscape.

Nemwang embarked on his political voyage as a young student, joining the All-Nepal Free Students Union (ANFSU) while studying at Ilam University in 2028 BS. His dedication and charisma soon propelled him to the position of SBU President at the Versatile Campus. However, his journey was not without its share of challenges.

In 2033 BS, Subas Nemwang found himself behind bars, incarcerated in the central prison during the Rajkaz case. Despite this setback, his commitment to his political ideals remained unwavering. At that time, he was a member of the Central Judicial Committee of the Unified Marxist-Leninist (UML) party, and he held the position of vice president within the party’s ranks.

Throughout his career, Nemwang displayed remarkable resilience and adaptability. He served as a member of the National Assembly from 2048 to 2052 BS, later being elected as a member of the House of Representatives from Ilam-2 in 2056, 2064, 2070, 2074, and 2079 BS. Within his party, he assumed significant roles, including deputy leader of the party parliamentary party and party vice president.

Subas Nemwang’s contributions extended to the highest echelons of Nepali governance. He served as the Speaker of the restored House of Representatives in 2063 BS, the Speaker of the Legislative Parliament in 2064 BS, and the Chairman and Speaker of the Constituent Assembly in 2065 and 2070 BS. His versatility also shone in ministerial positions, as he took on the responsibilities of Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Minister of General Administration, and Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee.

Nemwang’s political journey was marked by resilience and commitment, as he faced multiple imprisonments during political upheavals in the country from 2032 to 2063 BS. He was not just a politician; he was also an educator, teaching at Nepal Law Campus from 2035 to 2042 BS and earning recognition as a senior advocate.

The news of his passing sent shockwaves through the political landscape. Subas Nemwang passed away from a heart attack at his private residence in Baluwatar. He was rushed to TU Teaching Hospital for treatment but tragically succumbed during medical intervention.

Leaders from across the political spectrum paid their respects to the late politician. Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Party President KP Sharma Oli, Speaker Devraj Ghimire, and National Assembly Speaker Ganesh Timilsina were among those who visited the hospital to gather information about Nemwang’s health.

Subas Nemwang, born on March 11, 1953, will be remembered as a dignified leader in Nepali politics who possessed the unique ability to connect with people from all walks of life. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of political leaders in Nepal.
