Lawmakers demand expediting mitigation, rescue efforts for monsoon hazards

In a meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR) today, lawmakers demanded that the government expedite mitigation, relief, and rescue efforts in view of the monsoon hazards.

They expressed their concerns over the lives affected by incidents of landslides, floods, lightning, and inundation across the country. Ishwari Devi Neupane demanded that the government ensure relief and rescue for the affected, accelerating efforts to mitigate potential incidents.

Manbir Rai and Amanlal Modi were among those lawmakers expressing their concerns over these matters.

Amresh Kumar Singh said that snapped electric cables in public areas have posed a grave threat to the public, demanding the attention of the concerned bodies for management.

Stating that landslides and floods have caused loss of lives and property, lawmaker Ram Hari Khatiwada informed the House that floods and landslides have resulted in casualties and property damage in various places in Okhaldhunga. The injured have been airlifted to Kathmandu and are receiving treatment. He drew attention to the disturbance of essential services including drinking water, electricity, internet, and irrigation due to disaster-related incidents.

Similarly, HoR member Man Bahadur Gurung demanded through the House the provision of relief, compensation, and accessible health treatment to victims, as landslides and floods have caused loss of lives and property in different areas of Kaski. Lawmaker Urmila Majhi informed the House that six people from Lamjung lost their lives due to monsoon-related disasters.

Likewise, lawmaker Kiran Sah drew the attention of the government and relevant bodies to disaster management, asking them to focus on risk reduction and preparedness.

Informing the House that 20 people were killed across the country due to rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday, with more than 16 people injured, lawmaker Abdul Khan demanded that the government conduct a detailed investigation into the increasing anomalies in the education sector.
