Leader Koirala Urges Nation-Centered Politics, Decries Commercialization of Governance

Senior Nepali Congress leader Shekhar Koirala has emphasized the need for politics to prioritize the nation and its people rather than power and personal gain. Speaking at a program organized by the Nona Koirala Memorial Foundation in memory of leader Nona Koirala on Monday, Koirala voiced concerns about the current state of Nepali politics.
“Politics is not meant for business or money. It should focus on public welfare,” Koirala remarked, criticizing the present political climate for placing power and monetary interests at its center. He accused officeholders across all three tiers of government of prioritizing personal interests over public service, lamenting that Nepali politics has increasingly become commercialized.
He also expressed disapproval of the government’s tendency to issue ordinances in haste, even as parliamentary sessions draw near, raising questions about transparency and governance.
Biratnagar Mayor Nagesh Koirala paid tribute to the late Nona Koirala, describing her as a prominent political, religious, and social figure who played a significant role in uniting the Koirala family in Nepali politics.
During the program, journalist Kishor Nepal was honored with the Nona Koirala Memorial Award, which carries a cash prize of Rs 25,000, in recognition of his contributions to journalism.
The event highlighted the legacy of Nona Koirala and underscored the need for ethical and service-oriented political practices in Nepal.
