Mahasamiti Meeting Must Go Ahead as Scheduled: Koirala Faction
In a decisive meeting held at Anupam Foodland in Battisputali, the Koirala faction of the ruling Nepali Congress has resolved to uphold the original schedule of the Mahasamiti meeting, dismissing President Sher Bahadur Deuba’s proposal to postpone the gathering. The meeting, which transpired on Wednesday, firmly expressed the faction’s commitment to convene the Mahasamiti meeting as planned from January 1-4 at Godawari in Lalitpur.
NC Vice President Dhanraj Gurung, addressing the media after the session, conveyed the faction’s strong stance in favor of maintaining the scheduled dates for the Mahasamiti meeting. The decision comes amid President Deuba’s concerns about the challenging weather conditions impacting the meeting, as he contemplates rescheduling it after the National Assembly elections slated for January 25.
During an earlier office-bearers’ meeting at his residence in Dhumbarahi, President Deuba had expressed apprehensions about Mahasamiti members facing difficulties in reaching Kathmandu due to the biting cold, proposing a postponement of the meeting. However, General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa, present at the meeting, dissented from the proposal.
In a parallel development, a meeting convened by the Shekhar group, attended by General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa, reached a unanimous decision opposing the idea of postponing the Mahasamiti meeting. The resolution underscores the factional divide within the Nepali Congress regarding the timing of the crucial Mahasamiti gathering.
