Mallikarjun Kharge wins Indian National Congress presidential election
Veteran leader Mallikarjun Kharge has won the election of the president of the Indian National Congress.
Leader Kharge received 7,897 of the total 9,385 votes, and his opponent, Shashi Tharoor, trailed behind with 1,072 votes. 416 votes were voided.
With the victory of Kharge, the leadership of the Indian Congress has gone out of the Gandhi family.
Kharge will replace interim Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, who has been occupying the post ever since Rahul Gandhi stepped down after the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
More than 9,500 delegates cast their votes in the presidential election which took place at the culmination of the party’s organizational polls.
As per Indian Congress sources, the elected president will take charge after Diwali in the presence of senior leaders in a program at the Congress headquarters.
